the River District

In 2019 the City of Owen Sound began the first phase of the Downtown River Precinct Plan that saw the revitalization of 1st Ave East between 8th and 9th Street. This phase included some key infrastructure upgrades and the building of the Farmers’ Market Pavilion. With respect to the heritage of the area, accessibility and inclusion were all considered in the spectacular design. Phase 2 will begin in the summer of 2022 and will see 1st Ave East between 9th and 10th Street. There are 4 Phases in the revitalization of the riverbank, scheduled for full completion in fall 2026.

The River District is Nestled along the banks of the Sydenham River. You’ll be welcomed by historic architecture and modern conveniences. Time can be spent in one of many shops, catering to a wide array of tastes from home décor, fashion, health & wellness, literature and music to toys, games, specialty foods, and many more. The River District is home to many locally-owned restaurants with flavours and cuisine from around the world. Lose yourself in the River Districts' rich art scene complete with outdoor art installations, murals, and an abundance of galleries showcasing local artists.

Some of the Conditions that Lead to the Creation of the River District

  • The area is a working downtown and provides services and amenities that support the regional economy first,
    tourism second.

  • The city’s core is currently positioned as a regional hub, due to its larger quantity of retail and service providers

  • Opportunities should better utilize assets such as public parking, the waterfront, walking trails and public washrooms.

  • The infrastructure, capital improvements, policy changes, and strategic positioning of the river precinct
    have been a welcomed

  • The current vibe or ambiance of Owen Sound’s downtown is fairly negative, but, at the same time optimistic

  • Survey results indicate that both residents and business owners have concerns about safety
